Our Milestones

  • 1940s

The late family matriarch Hajjah Rosemah Binte Mailu migrated to Singapore along with her son Yusman from Padang, Indonesia in the late 1940s.

In 1950, she married a local Singaporean named Haji Bagindo Martian. They settled in a home along Bussorah Street and together, they were blessed with four children, Lizar, Maryulis, Tarmizi and Zulbaidah.

  • 1950s

In the late 1950s, Hajjah Rosemah started a small roadside stall along Kandahar Street. The Kampong Glam area was a melting pot of races and cultures, having been set aside as an area for Muslim immigrants to settle in the 19th century.

All five of her children were roped in to help run the stall after their schooling hours, so for the Martian offspring, their childhood revolved mainly around the family food business.

  • 1974

The Hawkers Department’s Special Squad was formed in 1974 to deal with the proliferation of itinerant hawkers in Singapore. Due to this ruling, Hajjah Rosemah rented a corner stall shophouse at Kandahar Street.

Considering its proximity to a tombstone maker, the restaurant became known as Nasi Padang Batu Nisan, batu nisan being the Malay words for tombstone.

  • 1980s

In the early 1980s, Hajjah Rosemah’s youngest daughter, Zulbaidah, along with her husband Zin Haron started another restaurant at No. 15 Bussorah Street.

The establishment was called Rumah Makan Minang Sabar Menanti Siang dan Malam, roughly translated to Minang Eating House Wait Patiently Day and Night. This was the forerunner to the current restaurant.

  • Business prospered, and they were able to extend to another stall unit adjacent. Through word of mouth, Rumah Makan Minang became known as the place for bona fide Indonesian food, namely Minangkabau cuisine.

The establishment was humbled by the visits of local and regional dignitaries.

  • We open another outlet at Tampines Hub!

  • Our central kitchen is set up to maintain the consistency of the food.

  • Venture partnership with Kisok Collective to open Padang Grill.
